「郷原」とは岡山県真庭市蒜山西茅部の郷原地区で、「郷原漆器」は約600年の歴史がある岡山県を代表する漆器です。大山道を行き交う人々の人気を集めましたが、昭和10年代の戦乱 期に漆の入手が困難になったために次第に衰退し、終戦を境として途絶えてしまいました。やがて世の中が落ち着き、「郷原漆器」の復興を望む声が高まり、平成元年から岡山県郷土 文化財団のもとに地元有志によってその取り組みが始まりました。
現在の「郷原漆器」は、昔ながらに地元蒜山で育った山栗の木を輪切りにして生木のままで挽き、後で乾燥させるという技法によって木地をつくり、漆を塗り上げています。平成4年11月には「岡山県郷土伝統的工芸品」の指定を受け、同8年4月には生産拠点となる「郷原漆器の館」が完成しました。また、平成18年3月には、その技術が「岡山県指定重要無形 民俗文化財」に指定されました。（「郷原漆器」のしおりより抜粋）

お手入れは難しくはありません。ただ、たわしのご使用は避けてください。
手洗いが望ましいですが、忙しい時は、食器洗浄機にかけてもまず大丈夫です。
毎日の使用で漆は艶を増していきます。これも漆器の大きな楽しみのひとつです。
なるべく箱にしまわずに、いつも食器棚に並べて使ってください。

Gobara is one small area of Hiruzen region located in about 100km north far from
Okayama-city.
Gobara Shikki was born 600 years ago in that small village Gobara, and because of its strongness and cheapness, Gobara Shikki had been used regulary by many people.
But, from the beginning of the World War II, it became difficult to get laquar, and worse still, many Japanese were sent to that war. Then gradually Gobara Shikki became ruined.
Then the time began to settle down after that war, and many people wished to revive Gobara Shikki heartly.
In 1989, some of the people of that district began to revive Gobara Shikki under the guidance of Okayama Prefecture Folk Cultural Foundation.
And now we are very proud of introduce you this special products of Okayama Prefecture, new born Gobara Shikki.
